Emission Retrofit Resource Center

FLEETSOURCE LLC is an authorized distributor for emission retrofit technology to help you reduce your fleets diesel emissions. We can provide equipment and installation for your diesel fleet, including school busses, waste haulers and off-road equipment.

Below you will explore some common questions and provide you with some links to additional resources if you would like to do some additional research. We welcome the opportunity to have one of our trained representatives meet with you to review the solutions we have to offer to bring your fleet's emissions into compliance with the law and meet your emission reduction goals.

What do emission retrofits do?
Diesel engines exhaust particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) that are considered hazardous pollutants. By retrofitting the emission system on your existing equipment with certain types of technology, the amount of PM and gaseous pollutants emitted into the environment can be reduced.

What types of emission retrofit solution are available?
Most emission retrofit solutions today fall into 4 categories:

  1. DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) Mufflers
  2. DMF (Diesel Multi-Stage Filter) Mufflers
  3. DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Muffler
  4. CFS (Crankcase Filtration Systems)
Items 1 through 3 above replace your existing mufflers, and are listed in order of increasing cost, complexity and pollution reduction efficiency. CFS systems eliminate emissions from the crankcase on the engine.

See our Emmission Resource Center for detailed literature on these types of equipment from Donaldson, for whom we are an authorized distributor.

What do these type of installations cost?
Costs vary widely depending upon the type of equipment you are retrofitting and the solution you select. Some estimated ranges (including installation) published by Donaldson are as follows:

  • DOC: $2,000 - $4,000
  • DMF: $6,000 - $8,000
  • DPF: $8,000 - $11,000
  • CFS: $800 - $1,200
Who pays for retrofits?
A variety of funding is available through various federal, state and environmental agencies.

What is the State of New Jersey requiring me to do?
On September 7, 2005, Acting Governor Codey signed into law a bill that would establish a program to cut exposure to harmful diesel soot emissions in school buses and to reduce diesel soot from garbage trucks, transit buses and publicly owned on-road and off-road diesel vehicles and equipment.

What funding does the State of New Jersey have available?
On November 8, 2005, voters approved Ballot Question #2, a constitutional amendment that will fund the diesel program and will be paid for with a portion of revenue from the existing Corporate Business Tax. The amendment will not raise taxes, but over the next ten years will shift a portion of the CBT revenue currently earmarked for environmental programs to provide grants for the cost of air pollution control equipment, which will reduce the levels of fine-particle pollution from diesel-powered engines.
